IMPRESSIONISM IN ART AND MUSICFriday 5th - Sunday 7th February 2009 The Georgian House Hotel, Haslemere, Surrey The elegant and historic Georgian House Hotel is situated in Haslemere High Street, and is set in attractive private gardens. With well-equipped modern and period bedrooms, it has its own car park, leisure spa and swimming pool. Impressionism was a shocking new style when it first arose during the 19th century, but the description itself was not a declaration, but rather a mocking catch-phrase. It remains suggestive and elusive, and can accommodate a great diversity of styles and subjects. Our weekend will explore a varied and representative selection of paintings and music, with illustrations on excellent hi-fi and visual equipment. The featured artsists and composers will include Monet, Degas, Pissarro and Cézanne, Debussy, Ravel, Delius and Britten. Arts in Residence offers an excellent cuisine including wine with dinner. Course members will arrive on Friday from 5pm, and the event will end with afternoon tea on Sunday. For those wishing to depart on Monday, it will be possible to stay for an extra night at a special rate. The weekend is designed as an informal 'house party' and guests need only the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge is required. Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. He lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Tim Gwyther is an experienced art historian and practising artist who has exhibited widely both in London and the regions. He has taken part in several Arts in Residence events. Price £270.00 per person (twin/double rooms), £295.00 (single rooms) to include all meals, wine, beverages, course fees and accommodation.
