BEETHOVEN IN VIENNA

Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th October 2009

The Chilworth Manor Hotel, Southampton

Beethoven is as central to music as Shakespeare is to drama and literature,
and his wide-ranging list of compositions offers endless opportunities for
discovery. Our weekend will concentrate on his second decade in Vienna, and
will feature a variety of music, including symphonies, concertos, chamber
music and piano sonatas, with illustrations on excellent hi-fi equipment
as well as a live concert.
The weekend is designed as an informal ‘house party’, so guests need only
the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge will be required.
Arts in Residence and the Chilworth Manor Hotel offer an excellent cuisine
including wine with dinner. The event will end with afternoon tea on Sunday,
but for those wishing to depart on Monday, it will be possible to stay for
an extra night at a special rate.
Chilworth Manor's impressive architecture is set amidst 12 acres of landscaped
grounds on the outskirts of Southampton, just a few minutes drive from both
the M3 and M27 motorways. The location and peaceful surroundings create a
beautiful setting, while the centrepiece of the building is the magnificent
galleried Manor Hall.

The Brodowksi String Quartet:
Violins: David Brodowski, Catrin Win Morgan Viola: Felix Tanner Cello: Vanessa Lucas-Smith
First Prize Winners of the 2008 Royal Overseas League Competition, the Brodowski Quartet
hold the Richard Carne Fellowship for Chamber Ensemble at Trinity College of Music. In 2008
they were selected as Park Lane Group Young Artists, performing to critical acclaim in the
Purcell Room, their playing highly praised by The Times. They have performed at leading
venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Barbican and the Edinburgh Festival, while
future plans include the Wigmore Hall.

Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain's leading journals, orchestras,
festivals and record companies. He lectures at venues throughout the country and
is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
