EXPLORING ENGLISH MUSIC

Friday 5th - Sunday 7th March 2010
Chantmarle Manor, near Dorchester

With Terry Barfoot and Andrew Burn

The weekend will explore the varied repertoire of English music, including masterpieces by some of our greatest composers, including Vaughan Williams, Bliss,
Finzi, Britten, Arnold and Elgar. Music examples will be provided on excellent hi-fi equipment. Chantmarle Manor is a beautiful 13th century building nestled
in the valley of the River Frome in Dorset. The house is surrounded by immaculately kept private terraced gardens with fountains, a moat, a summerhouse and
two ponds secluded in the woods. From the well-appointed rooms there are splendid views of the Dorset countryside.

Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. A well-known figure in the musical life of
southern England, he lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Andrew Burn is a trustee of the Bliss and Finzi Trusts, and a specialist in 20th century British music, on which subject he has written widely, including
liner notes for over 100 CDs. He is Head of Education and Ensembles for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Course members will arrive on Friday at 5pm and depart after tea on Sunday. Arts in Residence and Chantmarle Manor offer an excellent
cuisine including dinner with wine and a traditional Sunday lunch.
