RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS:

A genius arrives on the British Music Scene
Friday 19th – Sunday 21st November 2010
Farnham House Hotel, Surrey

Hosted by Em Marshall, Chairman, RVW Society
With Terry Barfoot and Gwyn Parry-Jones

The genius of Vaughan Williams was confirmed a hundred years ago in 1910 with the
composition of two towering masterpieces: the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis
and the Sea Symphony. In the context of the composer’s creative development, this
residential weekend conference will consider these works and others of the period,
exploring the experience the music offers the listener, with music examples on
excellent hi-fi equipment.

The characterful Farnham House Hotel in Farnham, Surrey, provides comfortable
individual bedrooms in a peaceful location just a mile along the A31 Alton Road from
the town centre. The weekend is designed as an informal ‘house party’, with an
excellent cuisine including wine with dinner, and will conclude with afternoon tea on Sunday.

Terry Barfoot is director of Arts in Residence. He writes widely on music for Britain’s leading
journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. A well known figure in the musical life of
southern England, he lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is Publications Consultant
to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Gwyn Parry-Jones played with the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, and for many
years lectured at Reading University, leaving recently to concentrate on his musical
interests, principally conducting, performing and lecturing.

Price: £270.00 per person (twin/double rooms), £295.00 (single rooms)
to include all meals, wine, beverages, course fees and accommodation.
