THE MUSIC OF RICHARD STRAUSS

The Angel Hotel, Midhurst, West Sussex

Friday 20th– Sunday 22nd October 2006

The Hotel

The Angel Hotel is located in the centre of the characterful Sussex market town of Midhurst, situated in the beautiful South Downs countryside. The building has an elegant Georgian façade, which hides a much older building, a former 16th century coaching inn full of real warmth and character.

The Course

Strauss enjoyed  a remarkably long creative life of more than sixty years, from the early 1880s to the late 1940s. He was a prolific composer who worked in all the established forms; beyond the opera house his work has been most valued in the fields of  the orchestral tone poem and the solo song with orchestra or piano. Our weekend will take account of all these aspects of the man and his music, and will include a song recital. It is designed as an informal ‘house party’, so guests need only the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge will be required.

Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. He lectures at venues throughout the country and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Joanna Bleach studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama. She presently sings professionally with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Peter Rhodes has worked variously as a solo recitalist, harpsichord continuo player and in opera. He has performed with many eminent artists, including Kiri te Kanawa and Benjamin Luxon. He has taken part in several Arts in Residence events.
