Our music will focus particularly on the nature of heroism and villainy in relation to two
operas: Verdi’s Aida and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The same theme will also
be explored in music by Kodály and Liszt. The event is designed as an informal house
party, and guests need only the ability to enjoy music, since no technical knowledge is
required. The music examples will be provided on excellent hi-fi equipment, including DVD.
Bartley Lodge is a splendid Grade II listed country house hotel set in the heart
of the New Forest, in 8 acres of grounds. The facilities are particularly well
appointed, including 31 en-suite bedrooms and an indoor swimming pool. The Grand
Baronial Hall will be the location for our meetings.
Course members will arrive on Friday at 5pm and depart after tea on Sunday. Arts
in Residence and Bartley Lodge offer an excellent cuisine including dinners with
wine. The weekend will end with tea on Sunday, but it will be possible to stay
for an extra night at a special rate.
Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies.
A well-known figure in the musical life of southern England, he lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is
Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
