RUSSIAN ROMANTICS

Friday 15th – Sunday 17th October 2010
The Speech House, Forest of Dean
During the later 19th century and the earlier 20th century the Russian repertoire
was one of the most fertile in all music, generating masterworks of extraordinary
richness and diversity. During our weekend we will discuss aspects of this legacy,
with music examples on excellent hi-fi equipment.

The Speech House Hotel in Gloucestershire is a 17th century former hunting lodge
set in the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean. Comfortably appointed bedrooms,
several with four-poster beds have been tastefully refurbished and offer modern
facilities while retaining their original charm, most overlooking the romantic
wilderness of the surrounding Forest of Dean.

Terry Barfoot is the Director of Arts in Residence, and writes widely on music
for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. A well
known figure in the musical life of southern England, he lectures at Oxford and
other universities, and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony
Orchestra.

Course members will arrive on Friday from 5pm, and depart after tea on Sunday, though
it will be possible to stay an extra night at The Speech House at a special rate.
Arts in Residence and The Speech House offer an excellent cuisine including dinner
with wine, and a traditional Sunday lunch. The weekend is designed as an informal
'house party' and guests need only the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge
is required.

Price: £270.00 per person (twin/double rooms), £295.00 (single rooms)
to include all meals, wine, beverages, course fees and accommodation.
Booking: Arts in Residence, 25, Mulberry Lane, Cosham, Portsmouth, PO6 2QU.
