SHOSTAKOVICH

Friday 25th - Sunday 27th February 2011
The Chilworth Manor Hotel,
Southampton

Shostakovich is now recognised as one of the great composers, and his wide-ranging list of compositions offers endless opportunities for
discovery. Our weekend will concentrate on the autobiographical Eighth String Quartet and the various compositions associated with it.
There will be musical illustrations on excellent hi-fi equipment, including DVD with large screen, and a performance by one of Britain’s
leading ensembles, the Brodowski String Quartet.

The weekend is designed as an informal ‘house party’, so guests need only the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge will be
required. Arts in Residence and the Chilworth Manor Hotel offer an excellent cuisine including wine with dinner. The event will end with
afternoon tea on Sunday.

Chilworth Manor's impressive architecture is set amidst 12 acres of landscaped grounds on the outskirts of Southampton, just a few
minutes drive from both the M3 and M27 motorways. The location and peaceful surroundings create a beautiful setting, while the
centrepiece of the building is the magnificent galleried Manor Hall.

Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies.
A well-known figure in the musical life of southern England, he lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is
Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Course members will arrive on Friday at 5pm and depart after tea on Sunday. Arts in Residence and
The Chilworth Manor Hotel offer an excellent cuisine including dinners with wine. The weekend will end with tea on Sunday.
