MUSIC AND THE GREAT WAR Monday 31st May – Wednesday 2nd June 2010 The Manor House Hotel, Newlands Corner, near Guildford With Terry Barfoot and Gwyn Parry-JonesThe event will explore the varied repertoire of music composed during the period of the Great War, 1914-18, including masterpieces by Elgar, Bliss, Nielsen, Ravel and Vaughan Williams. Music
examples will be provided on excellent hi-fi equipment. Set in 9 acres of parkland with fine views and excellent leisure facilities, the Manor House Hotel is well placed for Guildford and the M25, while West Clandon station is nearby. There is a large car park and the bedrooms are particularly well-appointed. Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. A well-known figure in the musical life of southern England, he lectures at Oxford and other universities, and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Gwyn Parry-Jones studied with David Wynne and Alun Hoddinott, and graduated from Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music. He played for some years with the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, and for many years lectured at Reading University, leaving recently to concentrate on his musical interests, principally conducting, performing and lecturing. Course members will arrive on Monday at 5pm and depart after tea on Wednesday. Arts in Residence and the Manor House Hotel offer an excellent cuisine including dinner with wine.
