SHOSTAKOVICH: A CENTENARY TRIBUTE

Friday 19th - Sunday 21st May 2006

The Dower House, Knowlton Estate, Canterbury

The House

The Dower House is a charming, Grade II listed Elizabethan house set in its own gardens, including a beautiful courtyard, amid the woods and parkland of Knowlton Estate. The historic city of Canterbury is within easy range for an afternoon visit.

The Course

Shostakovich inherited the great tradition of Russian music for the concert hall and for the stage. His own contribution to that tradition, including ballet music, operas, six concertos and fifteen symphonies, made him one of the most significant composers of the 20 th century. His chamber music, centred on the fifteen string quartets, is no less important. We will explore some of the composer’s best loved music, while also including some wonderful pieces that are less well known. Music examples will be provided on excellent hi-fi equipment.

The weekend is designed as an informal ‘house party’. Guests need only the ability to enjoy music; no technical knowledge will be required.

Terry Barfoot writes widely on music for Britain’s leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. He lectures at South Downs College, at Oxford and other universities, and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Gwyn Parry-Jones played for some years with the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras and now lectures at Reading University. He is also a visiting lecturer at Oxford and Gothenburg Universities and the composer of a number of chamber works and has been elected a member of the Royal Society of Arts.

Course members will arrive on Friday at 5pm and depart after tea on Sunday. However, for those wishing to depart on Monday, a buffet supper and overnight accommodation will also be available on Sunday for a nominal extra charge. Arts in Residence offers an excellent cuisine including a four course dinner with wine and a traditional Sunday lunch.
